Examinations
When will I know when the examinations are?
The dates for the examinations are posted on the IPONZ website early in each year. Click here to see current dates and deadlines.

The examinations are usually held around early July of each year. For more information about examination dates click here.
What materials will I need for the examinations?
The examinations are set in accordance with the syllabus which is published on the IPONZ website. There are no other materials available and there are no courses of study or instruction provided. Click here to see the current syllabus.

Renewing your Patent Attorney registration
When do I need to renew my patent attorney registration?
The deadline for renewal is 1 January of each year (regardless of the date of registration)
How do I renew my Patent Attorney registration?
An annual practice fee (renewal fee) of $65 (GST exclusive) is payable on 1 January each year. IPONZ currently sends out a reminder notice by 1 December of each year with a debit form.
Restoring your Patent Attorney registration
How do I restore my Patent Attorney registration?
If you miss the deadline to renew your registration you are able to apply to have your registration restored by completing the Patent Attorney Restoration form and emailing it to mail@iponz.govt.nz. The prescribed fee of $65 (exclusive of GST) is required for restoration.
Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMRA)
What is the TTMRA?
The TTMRA is an arrangement between the Governments of Australia and New Zealand that enables a person registered to practice an occupation in New Zealand, to be entitled to practice an equivalent occupation in an Australian jurisdiction and visa versa.
