Enhancements to IPONZ’s Case Management System

29 August 2012

Enhancement to IPONZ’s case management system for designs and trade marks effective today are as follows:

Search improvements

Search case title(s) with brackets and operators

You can now search case titles using brackets and operators for more advanced queries.

Operator

Description

For example

( )

Divides your search into a logical search sequence.

(cat OR dog) AND (food OR biscuits) will return case titles containing any of the following combinations ‘cat and food’, ‘cat and biscuits’, ‘dog and food’ and ‘dog and biscuits’.

AND NOT

Omits specific words from your search.

For example (cat OR dog) AND (food OR biscuits) AND NOT mix will return case titles containing any of the following combinations ‘cat and food’, ‘cat and biscuits’, ‘dog and food’ and ‘dog and biscuits’ and not mix.

In addition to the new functions the use of quotations around a single word will produce results where an entire mark consists of that single word or letter, for example, “cat” will find cases with the exact same case title. Placing quotations around a group of words or phrases will return results where the mark contains that phrase in the order it’s written. For example “cat food” may find results such as ‘Joe Blogg’s Cat Food’.

Search Vienna Codes with AND, OR and AND NOT

You are now able to use AND, OR and AND NOT when searching for cases with specific Vienna codes.

Operator

Description

For example

OR

Using OR between terms will return results which contain either term.

Entering 8.1.1 OR 8.1.4 in the Vienna Classification code(s) field will find results that contain either 8.1.1, 8.1.4 or both codes.

AND

Using AND between terms will search for marks which contain both terms. It will be calculated before OR requests

Searching for 8.1.1 AND 8.1.4 and the results will show any Cases containing both Vienna codes.

AND NOT

The use of AND NOT will omit any results containing a Vienna code(s) that you do not wish to include in your results.

Entering 8.1.1 AND NOT 8.1.4 will find results containing Vienna code 8.1.1 but will omit any results containing both 8.1.1 and 8.1.4.
