New design regulations coming into force

New designs amendment regulations to streamline the application and registration process come into force this month.

The Designs Amendment Regulations 2011, which amend the Designs Regulations 1954, will be in effect from 19 April 2011.

The amendments will:

confirm that applications and correspondence can be filed online
remove the need for duplicate copies of forms and representations
allow a request to delay the registration of a design for a period of up to 15 months from the filing date
provide a restoration period and process.
