Update to trade mark practice guidelines

IPONZ has updated its guidelines about the classification of goods and services.

We have updated our practice guidelines about the classification of goods and services in trade mark applications.

Our updated guidelines include information about the 13th edition of the Nice Classification, which came into effect on 1 January 2026. Appendix Five of these guidelines lists the goods and services that are now classified in a different class.

For national trade mark applications filed on or after 1 January 2026, goods and services will be classified according to the 13th edition of the Nice Classification.
