Refund of fees

A refund will be considered where required or permitted by the Regulation 149 of the Patents Regulations 2014.

Refunds will not be given:

  • once a filing has been receipted and work has begun, or been completed, on the filing
  • on GST, where the applicant has chosen to pay GST with their application.

Request a refund

Request a refund in writing and include the following information:

  • receipt date
  • receipt number
  • amount you are requesting be refunded
  • reason for refund
  • name of person/organisation the refund is to be paid to.

If you have paid the fees using our direct debit system, the refund will show as an adjustment on your next direct debit statement.

If you paid the fees by any other method, your refund will normally be direct credited into your bank account.

IPONZ requires direct credit payments for PCT International applications.

Once you have filed a PCT international application you’ll receive an email with the summary of the fees due and the MBIE PCT Trust Account details to pay your fee into.
